Enjoy the December Holidays with Braces

Many children with braces could indulge in an increased amount of sweets during the Holidays, leading to more dental visits. Now, some orthodontists are offering tips so that these individuals will have a Holiday season.

Experts warn that a number of factors can lead to a bent bracket or broken wire, especially during Christmas/Hanukkah/Kwanza. This may include candy canes as well as chocolate with jelly centers and caramels that can stick to teeth. The American Association of Orthodontists (AAO) advises parents to offer candy that does not contain caramel, taffy, jelly or licorice.

However, individuals with braces can enjoy other treats such as peanut butter cups or soft chocolate. Dr Slutsky says that “The holidays should be a fun time for all children - including those in orthodontic treatment.”

Orthodontists also advise patients with braces to always brush and floss after they indulge in Holiday meals and treats so that there will be good results at the end of their treatment.
